Darwin Deez and Cid Rim Spice Up Deez’s “You Can’t Be My Girl”

Darwin Deez  just released Songs For Imaginative People ~ his follow-up to the successful eponymous debut ~ via Lucky Number and now he’s revealing the “You Can’t Be My Girl” (Cid Rim Mix) remix to the public.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with Deez and feels the need to force him into a genre, tag him with the indie pop artist label.  But once you actually listen to his work, you’ll find that he is not so easy to pigeonhole.

The remix follows the brilliant Keith Schofield-directed “You Can’t Be My Girl” video, which has been viewed over 500k times across YouTube and Vimeo. The video utilizes soulless corporate stock footage into which Darwin is super-imposed to tell an engaging, comical story of unrequited love.  I swear, you might recognize some of the “cast of stock characters” from real skin-care, travel, and dating website commercials.  Then, off to the side, you see a gangly Deez looking like the third wheel but insisting to the beautiful objects of his desire that he’s not interested in them. Watch the video, it’ll all make sense once you do.

Clemens Bacher, aka Cid Rim, brings “You Can’t Be My Girl” to a new level with more bite and edge.  Instead of the lovable loser feel of the original song, Cid Rim’s remix adds teeth to the song. His combo of tech beats, sweeping synths, and throbbing pulses are likely to encourage dance-floor shapes way beyond the geometric.

Darwin Deez is currently on a massive national US tour and will give several energized performances at SXSW. Catch him if he’s coming to a city near you.
