You’re pretty much guaranteed a good time when two independent sources of awesomeness come together, mesh, and produce something that is even greater than the sum of its two parts. You can’t say no to chocolate and peanut butter, and don’t even try to say no to to the combined musical powers of London and LA as represented in AM and Shawn Lee’s upcoming album, La Musique Numerique, available on May 7 through Park The Van Records. This release is the first since 2011’s Celestial Electric, which garnered praise from KEXP, Filter, Under The Radar, and Nylon.
The duo, who initially bonded over a shared mutual love of vintage French and Italian Soundtrack music and 80s digital effects, explores all facets of life on this project ~ themes of love, addiction, and even economic bitterness. It’s a throwback to the Casio’s heyday, but somehow it also manages to be futuristic and inventive
Album opener “Two Times” blends 70s funk with 80s Sleng Teng Riddims, complete with an infectious groove that will keep you off your butt and on your toes. Their irresistible track “Automatic” features a crazy cool chorus punctuated by a danceable beat, funky filtered bass lines, and an electric sitar intro that will suck you in and hook you. “All The Love” speeds up the pace with a mean disco beat, catchy vocal melodies, and a chorus that begs you to move. “In The Aftermath” is a sonically rich ballad with swirling layers of vintage synth instrumentation that set an atmospheric tone, showing a softer side of the album and the artists responsible.

Neither AM nor Shawn Lee are strangers to the heat of the spotlight. As a solo artist, AM has earned widespread acclaim for his unique mixture of pop, soul, R&B and psychedelia, and Shawn Lee, best known as an instrumentalist groove-master, is also one of hip hop’s most sampled artists. The duo have shared stages with talent including AIR, Phoenix, Sigur Ros, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Caetano Veloso, and Bonnie “Prince” Billy.
