Moth ~ Redefining the Term “Supergroup” in Strange and Wonderful Ways
We all pretty much know the definition of a traditional supergroup (check out our article on Hellyeah for some spot-on clarification if you need any). For LA’s Moth (or Mothsounds…or The MOTH), though, someone’s going to have to coin a new term for this band of brothers, all with killer musical pedigree (which you can and should read up on here, courtesy of blabbermouth.net)…not only does the band continuously add new musicians (all of the same high caliber and all familiar faces), which is not how it’s usually done, but they count in their brotherhood and thus as part of the band Warren Riker, Grammy-winning, axe wielding record producer (yes, we shall always refer to Warren by his full title) and in-demand, multi-talented director and producer Joe Puccio (and I’m going to add in my unsolicited two cents here and give a huge “Well done, my friends, it was about freakin’ time a band stopped just looking in the mirror!” to Moth for acknowledging, embracing, and loving ~ it’s the purest kind of man-love, based on respect for each other’s talent, so shut up ~ the people who really are the unsung [no pun intended…well, maybe], invaluable other half of the record-making process)
…And that’s just the beginning…there are collaborations that spring up daily, surprise jam sessions and even recordings with the best of the best who happen to have one day off from touring in the next year and naturally spend it putting their musical stamp on a Mothsounds track, planned guest artists …the list of how the Moth family grows is fantastically organic. Generally, I can make mention of a band’s line-up and be relatively sure that the next day it will be the same ~ or at least contain the same number of names. Not so with Moth, my new musical obsession (maybe all-around obsession, too, ‘cause I have the feeling that sure, these guys…and the guys and/or gals who’ll be joining in tomorrow and the day after…have talent, understand that they’re only part of the equation, and take their music very seriously, but also have spectacular and wonderfully twisted senses of humor ) ~ and thus I preface the following information with the words “As of and for today Jan. 4, 2015, Moth is” Joe Puccio, Dewey Bragg, P.J. McMullan, Dan Grody, Donovan Karalius, Gary Gladson, Mike Clark, Warren Riker, John Paul Jones, and all their friends…and some of their friends, too (see what I mean!)!
Now that you (kind of) know who Moth is right now, it’s time to witness what they ~ all of them, in front of the camera, in the recording studio, behind the camera, and probably from ten other places all at once ~ can do…and once you hear/see what that is, I think you’ll agree that not only does the band deserve the creation of a new moniker that’s at least three notches up from “supergroup,” but that they’ve also blown the old phrase “Like moths to a flame” to bits… Screw the drawing power of a flame, these Moths are the ones pulling us in with their powerful and irresistible “rock n rollin’ dark dirty doom” that’ll make you want to…well, that makes me want to…well, let’s just say the significant other gets a very happy look on his face when I say I’m going to play some Moth.
Listen to a bunch of Moth’s earlier tunes here on Soundcloud.
Watch the official “Womanizer” video, circa 2012, directed and produced by Joe Puccio, co-produced by Warren Riker, Grammy winning axe wielding record producer (DOWN, Cathedral, Cynic), filmed by Llewelyn Chin and Kenny Anderson, and starring Moth ~ Joe Puccio (KNAC-DC, County, Dimestore Hoods), Dewey Bragg (Pissing Razors, Kill Devil Hill, Years of Cold), PJ McMullan (3rd Strike, Interstelar) and international dance superstar Izabella Lewandowski, here.
…and in the name of The Holy, Uncontainable Moth, get yourself to their January 24 (Saturday) show at The Viper Room in West Hollywood ~ they’ll be sharing the stage with Fall To June and Black Sabbitch: THE All Girl Black Sabbath, who’ll be performing a badass late set. Doors are at 8pm PST and you’ve got to be 21+ to get in…dems the rules!
