Wild, hot, and headbangers’ heaven ~ that was Wacken Open Air 2013 (the famous festival’s 24^th year!), which included over 120 bands on seven stages playing to a voracious crowd of 75,000 fans braving the scorching heat. Metalheads from all over the world celebrated the most legendary party of them all and turned the little village of Wacken in Northern Germany into the one huge celebration of heavy music, the bands who play it, and the faithful who love it.

 

The 24th Wacken Open Air proved just as unique as its predecessors, with its signature vibe that defies description and has to be experienced to be understood.  Live at Wacken 2013 brings the experience right into your home via DVD, Blu-Ray, and CD, capturing all the hits, the legends, the fans, and the unforgettable performances.

 

The 3 DVD set and the 3 Blu-Ray set offer plenty of music, with 43 bands and 106 songs, and the audio version ~ on 2 CDs ~features 32 highlights. Live at Wacken 2013 is also available on Amaray and as a digital download.

You will see rock icon Alice Cooper, who still knows better than most how to put on a spectacular show. His Wacken appearance is no exception, featuring three guitarists, captivating visuals, and hits like “Billion Dollar Babies” and “Hey Stoopid.”

Nightwish, with new singer Floor Jansen (although she’s been with the band long enough now and fit in so effortlessly that “new” really no longer applies) gives a performance that receives an ecstatic reaction from the crowd, Metal Queen Doro celebrates her 30th anniversary of being on stage in style, and Sabaton kills it with a huge audience choir in the midday sun.

Lemmy Kilmister, the one and only, hits the stage (ignoring recent health issues that caused several show postponements) and in the blistering heat, Motörhead delivers a shortened but balls-to-the-wall set, blasting through “Damage Case,” “Metropolis,” and “Over The Top” like only they can.

You get to witness Deep Purple, the groundbreaking forefathers of the heavier genres, play Wacken for the first time, much to the crowd’s delight, especially when the band launched into their classic “Lazy.”

 

And the list goes on: Thrash-Metallers Annihilator open the festival, wild moshpits break out during Anthrax’s classic-filled set, the epic entity that is Lingua Mortis Orchestra feat. Rage riles up the already crazed fans, Ugly Kid Joe invite Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell to join them for their rowdy rendition of “Ace Of Spades.” It’s moments and performances like these that make Wacken so special.
