Dan12Choreographed dancing, stage props, twerking and even aerial silks like something out of Cirque du Soleil…Nope, this wasn’t the recent Pink tour, it was a performance by none other than The Dan Band. It has taken me a couple of years to have a chance to check them out as I was always out of town when they were in, but finally, I was able to catch them when they made it back to New York.

For those of you who think you have no clue who The Dan Band is, WRONG, you do…

And as soon as I mention how you know them, you’re going to give yourself a “Duh, coulda had a V-8″-type smack on the forehead.

Dan Finnerty caught America’s attention as the foul-mouthed wedding singer in the hit film Old School, performing his now-infamous raunchy rendition of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” as well as with other appearances in Todd Phillips movies including The Hangover and Starsky & Hutch.

I mean, who can forget this clip from Old School ~ and that’s just a taste of The Dan Band sense of humor: their shows are made up primarily of them singing songs typically and famously performed by female vocalists blended with even more comedy that’ makes for perfect for a night of laughter and enjoying that drink in your hand (warning ~ you may wind up spilling it). And at the show I attended, that was the vibe the entire night ~ just a riotous good time, nothing but fun with some talented and pretty wacky guys.

I’d honestly hate to give away any of the details because you really should see The Dan Band live to appreciate the dancing, twirling, crotch grabbing, and other, uh, forms of creative expression these guys bring to the stage.  Between songs there was lively banter with the audience, reading of text messages, and a bit of a stand-up comedy type moments. The musical highlights of the show are without question “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” “Candy Shop,” and Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” ~ complete with large screen dance routine playing behind the band.

The show is a little on the lengthy side for what it is, but it’s worth the inexpensive (typically around $20) ticket for an hour and a half of laughs and, to use and old-school word, “zaniness.”
