Young Sensations Unlocking The Truth Play Austin on the Way to SXSW and Coachella
Unlocking the Truth is a young metal band from Brooklyn, New York, who write and create their own lyrics and music. The founding band members are Malcolm Brickhouse (electric guitar) and Jarad Dawkins (drums).
In March of 2012, Unlocking the Truth competed on Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater (aka Tears of Blood ~ watch the video HERE) and made it to the Show-Off Round, and afterward they began performing at festivals around New York City and in Times Square.
Last year, Malcolm and Jarad decided they needed a bass player, so they asked their best friend, Alec Atkins, from preshchool to join their band. Even though Alec did not know how to play bass, the boys taught him how to play from scratch.
One of Unlocking the Truth’s biggest breaks came last August after winning the first round of the AfroPunk Battle of the Bands. Although they did not win the final battle, they were still invited to perform at the AfroPunk Festival.
As their buzz kept growing, they were given opportunities to perform at the 2013 Fun, Fun, Fun Festival in Austin, Texas and at the NYC film premiere after party of Death Metal Angola.
What’s really exciting now is that Unlocking the Truth is part of the 2014 lineup of the Coachella Music & Arts Festival and they’ll also be performing at SXSW (South by Southwest).
The band appeared on “Totally Biased,” “Fuse News TV,” and most recently in a Beats by Dr. Dre commercial.Unlocking the Truth were featured in the December issue of New York Magazine as the 15th Reason To Love New York; they’ve also earned recognition from Revolver Magazine, Noisey, Vice.com, Spin.com and the buzz has quickly spread across the internet.
Unlocking the Truth ~ who names Metallica, Slipknot, Disturbed, Chelsea Grin, Motionless in White, Escape the Fate, and many other great bands as its inspiration ~ has created enough music to complete at least 3 CDs and still counting. In fact, they’re going into the studio late spring to record their first album. If you can, check them out in person ~and make sure to visit them at one of the sites below.
