Conway Does it Her Way
Fearless stage presence, badass style, and no apologies for saying what she thinks when she thinks it…all topped off by a voice that resonates with audiences and draws them in to her world. That’s Conway, who’s gone from “the girl with the viral video” to radio darling and magnetic live performer. Fierce but approachable, Conway is The Whole Package.
So how did this St. Louis born powerhouse who headed to Brooklyn and is now busy taking over LA catch everyone’s attention? That’s easy ~ talent and determination. She filmed her first video/single, “Big Talk,” using her laptop camera ~ and did all her own editing. It immediately got over 350K views and NYLON and a slew of other outlets picked it up ~ and she ended up being signed to Columbia. The song will be heard on an upcoming episode of “Girls” soon, too, and we’ll bet Conway will go from emerging sensation to established star in record time.
Buzzbands named her one of 10 LA Artists to Watch in 2014 and Rolling Stone chose her as one of their 10 Best Discoveries at this past CMJ. She’s been on tour with St. Lucia and has opened for The Fratellis and The Ceremonies.
Her new “Hustler” video (feast your eyes here) has director/photographer Zach Gold at the helm; he loved her CMJ performance so much that he came up to her afterwards and said they had to do a video together. Keep in mind that Zach has worked with David Bowie, Drake, David Beckham, Iggy Pop, Iman, Lebron, Steve Carrell, and was personally asked by 50 Cent to shoot the cover of his album, so for him to approach Conway, well, what did we tell you? This girl is turning the heads not just of her fans, but of the best in the industry. She and Gold collaborated on all the costuming and staging of this video together (gotta love a hands-on artist who isn’t shy about expressing her vision and getting her hands dirty!)
For Conway (whose first name is actually Kassia), “Hustler” is about all the shapeshifting we have to do and the various personas we have to take on; she comes at it from the perspective of a being a female artist in the music/entertainment industry. Conway is not the norm (and we love her for it!) ~ she’s raw and honest, has a strong point of view, but still manages to maintain a very pop vibe that’s pretty irresistible.
