“Canning draws a rough-hewn, earthen beauty from the strings on tracks like the misty “Never Go to the Races” and the wistful “Last Song for the Summer Hideaway”. There’s a refreshing sense of humor present in the album’s song titles and sequencing…Taken together, this sense of humor and the album’s unadorned songwriting combine to give You Gots 2 Chill, and Canning, a charmingly unpretentious vibe.” ~ PITCHFORK
“Canning has delivered here his most personally stylized record to date, offering the psychedelic guitar washes and ambient effects understandably overshadowed on pop-tending Broken Social Scene recordings.” ~ FILTER
“…You Gots 2 Chill continues to live up to its relaxation-centric title…Keeping with the good vibes of ‘Plugged In’, ‘Bullied’ is a bare-bones affair of textured synth and lush slide guitar that practically carries you into the sky and lovingly places you on the puffiest of clouds.” ~ CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND
“It’s all lovely… but the best moments here – the jazzy, low-key funk of “However Long,” the backward-masked electronic of “New Zealand Tap Dancing Finals,” the slow-spiraling psychadelia of “Last Song for the Summer Hideaway” – burst emphatically through the fog.” ~ RELIX
Brendan Canning recently met up with NPR’s World Café in Toronto, and the session debuts today, featuring gorgeous full-band renditions of You Gots 2 Chill tracks such as “Plugged In,” “Bullied Days,” and “Never Go To The Races.” In addition to the session, Brendan takes World Café’s David Dye on a tour of his favorite spots in Toronto in a “Sense of Place” interview. Today Brendan also premieres the new music video for “Bullied Days”, the second single off of his sophomore solo LP You Gots 2 Chill. The video for the track, which features vocals by Daniela Gesundheit of Snowblink, finds a distressed man on a bridge whose day is suddenly turned around when a little girl unexpectedly befriends him.
