Band Currently Prepping to Debut Brand New  Material

Basic CMYKArmed with “Bagboy,” their first new song in nine years, the Pixies will launch the first leg of what will be a massive global tour on September 29 in Paris, France.  It will be the first tour the Pixies have done in nearly two years, and it will give them an opportunity to do something they haven’t been able to do in two decades:  premiere brand new Pixies songs, the first collection of new material since 1991’s Trompe le Monde.  Log onto pixiesmusic.com for complete on-sale dates and ticket purchasing information.

For this tour, which will feature a brand new stage set and production, the Pixies ~ Black Francis – guitar/vocals, Joey Santiago – guitars/backing vocals, and David Lovering – drums/backing vocals ~ will be joined by bassist Kim Shattuck.  Shattuck played bass for the all-girl L.A. garage rock band The Pandoras and then was the guitarist for the pop punk band The Muffs.  The four musicians have been holed up in an L.A. rehearsal space getting ready to offer the most wide-ranging concert set-lists of their career.

“Along with everyone’s favorites, we’ll be playing songs that we haven’t played in ages or never played live before,” said Black Francis.  “Songs like ‘Brick is Red,’ ‘Havalina,’ ‘Tony’s Theme,’ and ‘Sad Punk.’  We’ve probably rehearsed some 80 songs, so we’ll be able to change up the set at the last minute if we feel like it.  We’re all really looking forward to this tour.”

doolittleMore About The Pixies

The Boston-formed Pixies have been hailed as the most influential pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement.  Their five studio releases and initial six years together effectively blazed the path for groups like Nirvana, Radiohead and Pearl Jam to rise to superstardom.  The Pixies disbanded in 1993 and launched their reunion tour in April, 2004 ~ virtually every single date sold out within minutes and fans traveled hundreds of miles to attend shows.  The Pixies shattered sales records around the world, SPIN called the tour 2004’s “Comeback of the Year,” and the band wrapped up ‘04 in New York City with 24,000 tickets sold for an unprecedented eight-night, sold-out run at Hammerstein Ballroom.  The Pixies continued their reunion tour in 2005, and then, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of their 1989 album Doolittle, launched the “Doolittle Tour” on October 1, 2009 in Dublin, performing the entire album beginning to end.  The SRO tour was so successful it lasted for two years, taking the band to 18 countries for 117 shows.

In May, 2013, it was announced that founding member Kim Deal had decided to leave the Pixies.  Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering made it clear that Kim’s place in the band would always be there for her.

Black Francis shared about the track that “The lyrics, coincidentally, were composed at a Starbucks Coffee in Harvard Square in Cambridge, about a hundred feet from where, 25 years ago, I composed some of the lyrics to an old Pixies song called ‘Break My Body.’   Twenty-five years later, some Starbucks in Harvard Square…I thought that was kind of interesting.  The music for the song has been around for a few years.  There are some demos I made with Joey and David a few years ago in Los Angeles, related to a film idea that still has yet to see the light of day, although work on the music continued.  So a lot of the musical idea had been kicking around for awhile.  It’s pretty simple, kind of a blues-based, two-note kind of thing, really.
