Niacin’s Krush : Get Your Daily Recommended Dose of B-3 Right Here
By Frank Poulin
This is what I like most about the world of music: there’s always something waiting around the corner that you’ve never heard before. No matter how much time you spend listening to music in your lifetime, you’ll never know every band and every sound out there, old or new. If you like surprises, music will never disappoint.
As if I needed any, I got a striking reminder of this fact today as I was wading through the sizable pile of press releases and new album links I get on a daily basis (I make it a point to give a listen to everything that comes across my Inbox). After checking out 20 or so bands that didn’t really grab my attention, my ears were glazing over by the time I came across a link to an advance copy of Niacin’s new CD, Krush, which drops April 2nd via Prosthetic Records. As a FlashWounds reader you should already know about the new CD, but I’d never actually heard these guys play (don’t laugh) so I gave it a spin.
First song. Immediately my ears perk up: this is tight — REALLY tight. These guys know what they’re doing. World-class drums, inspired bass line… and those keyboards! I haven’t heard anyone kill it like that on an old-school Hammond B-3 since Keith Emerson on Karn Evil 9!
The first 4 tracks are seriously good, but they’re just announcing what’s to come. Tracks 5, 6 and 7 (“Car Crash Red,” “Electrocity,” “Cold Fusion”) are insane, dripping with funk and jazz and rock and all sorts of jammy goodness. By this time, I’d stopped what I was doing and I’m looking these guys up on Amazon to get their other CDs because I know I’m gonna want more after this one.
Of course I feel silly for not knowing until now how good these guys actually are, especially since they’ve been around as a group for 17 years. But hey, my consolation prize is that my iPod now has all this fantastic new music for me to enjoy.
Well, new to me, anyway.
