The UK’s Scanners Release Their Mexico EP

By Jane Croft

scannersUK’s Scanners just released their Mexico EP with Dim Mak Records and it’s so authentically soulful that it leaves you feeling vulnerable and craving more of the emotional connection they provide.  They’re great singers, great musicians, but there is some element of crazy empathy in their songs that makes you wonder if they’ve been spying on you. Their brand new tracks “Mexico,” “Control,” and “Charmed Life” are mini-adventures in themselves with indie rock threads and fun punk edges.

With the release of Mexico, the year is certainly off to a strong start for Scanners, but 2013 has much more in store for them.  Their Love Is Symmetry album will come out on Dim Mak later on this year and two of the group’s members, Sarah and Mat, just had a baby.  What can we say ~ great things come in sets of three!

If you don’t recognize their sound from their previous albums, Violence is Golden and Submarine, then you’ve probably heard Scanners’ tracks on television shows including “Entourage,” “One Tree Hill,” “The Big C,” and “Skins.”  Their song “Salvation” found many new fans thanks to its use in “Gossip Girl,” and the song “Lowlife” gained even more popularity through the films Endgame and Mama’s Boy.

The band started in 2005 when Sarah Daly and Matthew Mole ~ yup, the new parents! ~ who had been working on songs together in Camden Town London while playing in other people’s bands.  They decided to join forces and take it to the next level with Tom Hutt and Amina Bates.  And just in time for their third album, Kilian Saubusse took over on the drums.  They’re not only worth a listen, they’re worth a plane ticket to SXSW.
