Glow Marrow Re-Energizes 80s Synth Music

By Jane Croft

The fresh-faced, crazy-energetic band Glow Marrow is set to release their EP, Braver Days, on March 5th and any self-identified child of the 80s (as well as anyone who falls outside of that enviable parameter) will happily welcome this project with open arms and ears.

glow-marrow-big-1Coming to us from LA by way of Thousand Oaks, the duo Derek Coburn and Darin Green have been friends and part-time collaborators since high school.  They paid their dues in their respective earlier days ~ jamming out tirelessly and crafting their art.  Finally, their mutual love of and talent for creating 80s synth beats and electronic-instrumental fusions gave birth to Glow Marrow.

The band produces an exhilarating sound ~ one that encapsulates the West Coast indie vibe while adding even more twists of color and sparkle.  Take their song “Julian;” Glow Marrow has constructed a great track in which the elements of synth and electronica weave around each other in a double helix.  And just to keep us on our toes, the guys have thrown in steel drums.

If we weren’t already intoxicated with nostalgia for the 80s music that these two young men have been kind enough to re-energize, then just wait until you hear their song “Bear Creek.”  The beats are distantly familiar ~ you actually want to check to see if any of Glow Marrow’s songs were on the soundtrack of St. Elmo’s Fire or The Breakfast Club ~ and yet totally new and unique to this musical experience.

kroqAs of now, Glow Marrow is touring around California, hitting up venues around Los Angeles and the OC. Be sure to tune into radio station KROQ, where you just might have already sneaked a listen to some songs off the upcoming EP.
